We’re weeks away from the premiere of Battle For A New Champion, but it seems that season 40 has become the talk of the town. In an announcement for the 39th season, Challenge showrunner Emer Harkin briefly talked about the milestone 40th season.
In his discussion, she outright says that the show wanted to “get some new champions” before season 40. This explains why the former champs on Battle For A New Champion will serve as mercenaries rather than regular cast members.
She also acknowledges that the format of season 39 may be unpopular, but production has been toying with this idea for a while.

But, the champions won’t have to stay away from The Challenge for too long. Our favorite spoiler account, Gamer, has confirmed that availability calls for Season 40 have started going out, but the show will likely film in February.
While some fans have speculated that the season will be an all-champs season (and I may have indulged in the rumors), Gamer claims that finalists and non-finalists are also getting calls.
We don’t know what tricks production has up their sleeves, but it’s likely that they’re playing around with different formats. And, they’re trying to give potential cast members as much notice as possible so they can plan their time away from work and families.
We’re certain to get more info as time progresses, but even if Battle For A New Champions isn’t your cup of tea, it seems like we’re guaranteed to have a format change when season 40 films.
