Bananas & Wes Complain About Participation Trophies and Rookies Calling Out Production

Two old Challengers complain about new Challengers being entitled. But are they wrong?

Bananas and Wes have reunited to talk about the end of Vets & New Threats and the future of the Challenge. Eventually, the two talked about entitled rookies who feel they deserve a “participation trophy” and want special treatment after doing one season.

Eventually, the two champions spoke on the Death, Taxes, and Bananas podcast about cast members who haven’t come back (around 37 minutes, 40 seconds). Specifically, they reference Horacio and Nurys not receiving invites after they questioned the outcome of the Pick It Up elimination on Battle of the Eras.

This resulted in a social media scandal, and production showed Derrick K. and Horacio the footage of the elimination to prove Derrick won. While this seemingly absolved the show of any foul play, the fact that production even addressed the scandal was unusual.

Bananas isn’t surprised Horacio and Nurys aren’t getting calls back after they amplified a scandal. Both Wes and Bananas have had past issues with production, but they haven’t allowed them to turn into public outbursts. They also feel they’ve been on the receiving end of poor judgment calls by the show, but The Challenge isn’t a sport; it’s a game show.

Bananas thinks that the newer generation feels that they can address unfair decisions without major repercussions, and he was only able to speak up after establishing his importance in the franchise. While this is likely true, Bananas probably entered the Challenge world with some expectations because other Real Worlders had followed a similar path. In Horacio’s case, he did come from a sports background. His second season was also Battle for a New Champion, which kind of erased the importance of veteran status, and production allegedly really wanted him to participate after his performance on Ride or Dies.

To be fair, Wes tried to balance the narrative because Jordan has also publicly called out production, and he’s been invited back. This has left rookies with the impression that they can do it, too.

Wes said he’d never do that, even though he’s been upset with production choices in the past. He claimed he resolved these issues by sitting down with producers and having “business conversations.” Ironically, Wes spoke about the New Threats roughly five minutes after making this comment, and he said the show should cast people without real jobs. Specifically, he referenced someone like Sydney, who was good for the franchise but likely won’t do many seasons because she has a real career.

Wes and Bananas’ conversation has gotten significant attention online, and Jemmye later chimed in. She alleges Wes called a radio station to complain about production while filming a season. She also claims Bananas had a meltdown about not being cast on Battle of the Seasons. (I have heard the rumor about Bananas being upset he wasn’t cast that season, but I haven’t seen any public outbursts.)
