Paulie Discusses His Breakup With Cara Maria

Paulie sheds some light on the decision to break up.

Paulie’s recent appearance on the Zach Nichols Podcast has confirmed something we all (kinda) knew. He and Cara Maria have broken up, but he finally gave some context to the split.

He said he always wanted to have a family, which means getting married and having kids. Based on his conversation with Zach and Pierre, Cara Maria never really got on the same page. He claims she would avoid committing to marriage or family life, but she didn’t want to end the relationship (or, in Paulie’s words, she’d “kick the can down the road”).

Cara Maria seemed to worry that having kids would disrupt her current lifestyle. She wanted the freedom to travel, go on a TV show, or “ride a horse.” Paulie also mentioned that she feared pregnancy would impact her body, so she’d float the idea of bringing a third person into the relationship to carry the kid.

Paulie claims he threw himself into work as an effort to show Cara Maria that they could do multiple things and she could maintain her lifestyle, but this didn’t change Cara Maria’s mind. Paulie even admits he entertained the idea of having a third person in the relationship. He’s never been a conventional person, but even this was a step too far for him.

A lot of these developments happened when the couple were on a hiatus from the show. During this time, Paulie says he went to therapy and found his faith. We also know he came out as bisexual, which was shown on The Challenge: USA 2.

Paulie mentioned that Cara Maria wants to continue to do reality shows, implying that’s her vice, but he also admits to having vices of his own. He called himself a “sexual deviant,” so he basically confirmed he was not the most faithful partner to Cara Maria (though, based on the War of the Worlds 2 reunion, they had an open relationship).

Now, Paulie wants to pursue a relationship that leads to a family — whether that’s with a man or a woman. Zach chimed in with his expert opinion and revealed men can’t get pregnant, so starting a family would be easier with a female partner. Paulie agrees, but mentioned there are options for same-sex couples.

Paulie still claims Cara Maria is his best friend, but in a surprising twist, he said he would target her if they did another Challenge season together. He says working with her isn’t good for his game. While this may have played a role in his early departure on Battle of the Eras, it’s hard to deny Cara Maria and Paulie had a strong and successful alliance on War of the Worlds 2.

Aside from targeting Cara on a future Challenge, this is a fairly transparent and mature take on the situation — especially because it doesn’t paint Cara Maria in an exceptionally negative light. But some people aren’t buying it. Corey Lay called out Paulie for forced drama, and he claims Paulie would take another L if he ever returned to the show.
