Real World Las Vegas 2 The Challenge

Dustin Zito: What’s His Challenge Legacy?

After four seasons, how is Zito remembered?

The Challenge is a show built on the back of The Real World and Road Rules. By the early 2010s, Road Rules was long gone, but The Real World was experiencing a resurgence. This coincided with the beginning of Era 3, and it truly felt like a new beginning for the franchise.

This created the perfect environment for someone like Dustin Zito. He was central to his Real World season — the super-popular Las Vegas sequel. We watched Dustin begin a relationship with Heather Marter, then their relationship was rocked when Heather found out Dustin had appeared on a homoerotic adult website.

These stories should have set Dustin up to be a mainstay in the relationship-based Challenge era. Instead, we saw him on four seasons, but over a decade later, he seems to have become a relic of the early 2010s.

Battle of the Exes

It’s kind of easy to forget that Dustin appeared on this season with Heather. The couple wasn’t actually exes yet, but they started off as a fairly strong team. Dustin & Heather were in the first heat of Give Me Some Honey, and they showed a lot of promise. Then, Dustin slipped, fell, and cut his knee in episode 3. He needed to get stitches, and due to their location, this sent him and Heather home.

While this was a brief appearance, it was also a fairly good introduction to Dustin. He showed a lot of potential, but he was also worried about assimilating into the Challenge environment. His adult entertainment background was somewhat mocked, but he did his best not to let this bother him.

Battle of the Seasons

If you remember Dustin on The Challenge, it’s probably because of this season. He was part of the blended Las Vegas team, and he and Nany were challenged to work with Alton and Trishelle. This proved to be difficult, but Dustin actually seemed to be a voice of reason.

The Vegas team was in a strong spot at the start of the season and worked with the “Rookie Revolution” alliance. Then, they split from this group — mostly because Alton was stubborn, but also because Trishelle was playing her own game. As the team imploded, Dustin tried to hold the group together and protect Nany. He stepped up to go into The Arena with her (and they won), and he got into an argument with Frank to defend his former roommate. But he couldn’t help the OG Vegas duo. When Trishelle didn’t pull her weight, he nearly quit the game.

Luckily, he stuck around and made the final. Throughout the season, we watched the Vegas team go from four top dogs to an underdog duo. Dustin and Trishelle came in second place in that final, and set Dustin up to continue on future seasons.

Free Agents

After taking a season off, Dustin returned for Free Agents, and he wasn’t going to be held back by a team. Early on, he was in a weird love triangle with Jessica and Emilee, but this season felt like it was his opportunity to prove his success on Battle of the Seasons wasn’t a fluke.

Sadly, that wasn’t the outcome. Dustin lost the Out on a Ledge challenge, and he was a contributing factor because he fell off the rolling pin trying to get a flag. Then, he worked with Nany during the Auto Body Rally challenge. Though they won their heat, Cohutta sent him into the second elimination, allegedly as an attempt to get rid of a strong player. Dustin then faced Frank in Wrecking Wall, and a sick Frank sent Dustin home (though there was no fighting this time).

Battle of the Exes 2

Dustin’s final Challenge appearance was also his quickest. He was paired with Jessica on Battle of the Exes 2 after their very brief fling on Free Agents. They didn’t do well in the I Got You Babe challenge, though they weren’t the last-place team. Instead, Wes sent Dustin into The Dome because he and Jessica were “middle” Challengers without many allegiances in the house.

This seemed to upset Dustin, who felt his adult entertainment past held him back from making connections in the game. Then, he and Jessica lost to Adam & Brittany in the Pole Position Dome. While they were the first team out of the main house, they did defeat Thomas & Hailey in the Sweaters Ex-ile game — so debatably, Dustin didn’t finish in last place this season.

What’s Dustin’s Challenge Legacy?

During the first three Challenge eras, we occasionally saw cast members who were Real World stars, but that potential didn’t translate into Challenge stardom. Dustin seems to be one of those people.

However, he established himself as a likable underdog. Dustin always seemed eager to prove himself, and he usually had his heart in the right place. This is most apparent in his relationship with Nany. When Knight threw her clothes into the pool, Dustin jumped in and turned it into a team-bonding experience. Then, he intervened when Frank was throwing personal insults at his former roommate.

Despite having his heart in the right place, Dustin also found himself on the outside of the boys’ club that usually ran The Challenge. He never really clicked with people like Bananas, Wes, or CT, and this sometimes caused him to doubt his place in the game. Unfortunately, he attributed this to his past in the adult entertainment industry. Nowadays, this wouldn’t be a big deal because there are a few straight male Challenge cast members appealing to a gay audience on OnlyFans.

Dustin’s Challenge career ended with a low point on Battle of the Exes 2. Allegedly, he wanted to continue doing the show but was involved in some type of sexual battery case. Dustin discussed this in a podcast with Jemmye where he maintained his innocence and claimed he went out of his way to obtain security footage to prove he wasn’t guilty. He was never formally charged, but this tarnished his reputation with production.

It would be nice to see Dustin make a return, because he has grown a lot since he debuted on the show. Some people may remember his solid performance on Battle of the Seasons, but he’s mostly remembered for his time on The Real World. His involvement with adult entertainment is sometimes discussed, though in retrospect, many people feel he was treated unfairly. He’s also remembered for his relationship with Heather, which could have been a defining trait if they had made it further into Battle of the Exes. Instead, this relationship is mostly depicted on The Real World or the VH1 show Couples Therapy.
