Exactly 20 years ago today, at about this time, the first episode of the Real World premiered on MTV. I’m sure no one knew it at the time, but that one episode sparked a phenomenon that has lasted two decades so far.

After 26 seasons the show still uses the same formula. Seven strangers are put into a house to see what happens when people stop being polite and start getting real. Although it wasn’t always seven people in the house at one time (season 21-24) and they weren’t always all strangers (Seattle, Cancun).
The show was an idea that was so simple, yet so unlike anything else that was on television. It truly did pave the path for reality TV, and I think we own a lot to The Real World.
So here’s to wishing the show a very happy birth, and many more to come!
