The challenges are full of mysteries. Questions that we may never know the real answer to. And this is one of them: Shouldn’t this upcoming challenge season be Battle of the Seasons 2??
Well, technically it is the second Battle of the Seasons. The first was was filmed in Mexico and aired in 2002. Below is a picture of Becky from the original New York cast, just to prove that the season was real.
So, why ignore the fact that this season existed?
It’s likely because very few people would remember the first season. I doubt very many challenge fans know that we’re on season 23. Fewer of those fans know that season 5 was Battle of the Seasons, and even fewer actually watched it. The hardcore fans (like me) are the exceptions. In order to have a sequel, people need to know what the original is.
Additionally, this season is a very different format. On the original Battle of the Season, the teams only had 2 people in them. Now, we have 4 people in a team. Also, the original season didn’t have elimination rounds (it was that long ago), and this season looks like it will.
I believe that leaving the “2” out of the title was deliberately done to revamp the series. MTV is making an old concept fresh again and I support this.
The reality is that we’ll never have a direct answer to this question, but this is just an educated guess.
