The Challenge is one of the oldest competition reality shows, and it’s given us a fair number of alliances over the decades. Many are praised for their successes, but perhaps the most-discussed group is the Johnny/ Evan/ Kenny alliance (JEK) that appeared during Era 2 and ended at the start of Era 3.
The trio is best known for winning The Ruins together, but is their praise really deserved? After all, they only did four seasons together, and the group hasn’t always been a cohesive unit.
In retrospect, is this alliance the best one the show has ever seen? Or is their dominance mostly a matter of revisionist history?
The Duel

After Fresh Meat, it was pretty clear that Evan and Kenny had become friends, but Bananas made his debut on The Duel. He was the first person sent home, so it’s clear that this alliance wasn’t a strong unit during that season. Kenny was also the third male eliminated — and the first Fresh Meat alum to leave The Duel — so it’s clear that JEK weren’t super close this season and the alliance didn’t impact the game.
In 2006, Johnny, Evan, and Kenny were new to the reality TV scene. During the aughts, this meant they had the opportunity to make appearances at bars and college campuses. JEK likely built a stronger relationship off screen while doing these gigs together.
The Gauntlet 3

The veterans were a dominant group for the bulk of The Gauntlet 3, so it really seemed like Johnny, Evan, and Kenny should have had the numbers to make it to the end together — or at least, never face each other in elimination. Somehow, this didn’t happen.
The first time the veterans lost a challenge, the rookies sent Evan to The Gauntlet. Somehow, CT managed to convince Evan and the rest of the rookies to vote Johnny as the second competitor. Johnny confronted Evan about this because the two were friends at this point, but the damage was done. Evan won the Sliders elimination and sent his friend Johnny home with a farewell kiss.
If we’re being honest, Kenny was a total floater this season. He skated to the end and pushed the “trim the fat” narrative that eliminated some of the girls but kept Eric around for the final. His most notable moments involved sitting around with Evan while the rest of the house was hooking up.
The Ruins

When people think of JEK, The Ruins is likely the first season that comes to mind. This is also the season where the alliance was really defined, mostly because Wes identified the friendship on the first episode. But we’d already seen some strong bonds on the show. Kenny and Evan were close friends during The Gauntlet 3, and Kenny and Johnny won The Island together.
Throughout The Ruins, JEK was united as the anti-Wes group, and they came up with schemes together — most notably, the plan to get rid of Kellyanne that resulted in Evelyn leaving. As the season progressed, the trio remained close, but once their common enemy left, some cracks started to be exposed. Near the end of the season, Johnny was sent into the final male Ruins, even though Derrick was a potential option.
The Ruins portrayed Johnny as a loose cannon in the alliance, and his antics disrupted the team dynamic. This can be seen when Bananas threw feathers on Derrick’s bed, and he had a strained relationship with Susie while she remained friendly with Evan and Kenny. Perhaps this was the justification for sending him into the final Ruins, but it also shows that Bananas might have been the third wheel in the group.
Rivals

The JEK alliance plays an integral role on Rivals, and they were mostly a strong group. The show makes it seem that the three wanted to run the final together, but rumor has it that Evan planned on leaving the season early. So, he volunteered to face CT & Adam in the third Jungle, which was an uncharacteristic move for Evan (especially after he made a similar mistake on The Duel).
The biggest problem this season was Kenny’s poor performance during early episodes, which forced him and Wes into the first two male Jungles. After winning those two, his performance improved, but Bananas & Tyler were a consistently strong team. The only tension came at the final Jungle, when Johnny & Tyler or Kenny & Wes had to compete against CT & Adam. While this sparked drama, there was no third option, so it was impossible for JEK to avoid the final elimination.
This season was the trio’s strongest performance as an alliance, and they all seemed to be on the same page until voting against each other was unavoidable. When that happened, Johnny (once again) got the short end of the stick. Luckily, he and Tyler “won” the T-Bone elimination, and that pair went on to win the whole season.
JEK’s Legacy, and the Fourth Member
The JEK alliance is one of the strongest groups we’ve ever seen on the show, but they’re probably not the most loyal alliance. They turned on Bananas a few times, and their intentions weren’t always super clear. But, they’re well-remembered because they were always working on some scheme. Whether they were trying to teach Wes a lesson or eliminate CT before the final, they drove the plot of their seasons.
It seemed there was a hierarchy in the group. Kenny was likely at the top of the ladder, because he seemed to avoid most of the confrontation. Evan was second in command, and though he was more vocal than Kenny, he assumed a bigger target by being outspoken. But if you really look at it, the group probably treated Derrick as more valuable than Johnny.

Kenny won three seasons: The Inferno 3, The Island, and The Ruins. Every time, Derrick was by his side. This level of trust likely meant a lot to Derrick because he struggled to get his first Challenge win, but Kenny helped bring him to victory. Similarly, Kenny knew Derrick was a workhorse and a dependable competitor.
On The Island, it’s heavily implied that Kenny would rather sail in the final boat with Derrick than Bananas, and on The Ruins, Derrick avoided the final male elimination while Bananas is sent to wrestle in the sand with Dunbar. We always see Derrick comply with JEK’s plans, even when he doesn’t want to, and he was a very reliable asset to the group.
Dependable, consistent, and reliable doesn’t always make good TV, so we saw more of Johnny’s antics on the show than Derrick’s interactions. We can also assume Johnny was doing outside appearances with Kenny and Evan from 2007 to 2011, building a closer bond, while Derrick was a new father at the time and was likely spending less time in the bar scene (ironically, Derrick is now the go-to Challenger for off-screen events).
Based on what we’ve seen, Johnny is the fourth-most-valuable member of the JEK alliance. He was often the sacrificial lamb, and the group didn’t seem to upset about losing him in the game.
While this may have been difficult for Johnny at times, it also forced him to get stronger. Kenny and Evan are gone from the show, but to his credit, Johnny has become the face of the franchise. If his two allies had continued competing, there’s a very strong possibility that Johnny wouldn’t “be the Challenge,” and he could have been overshadowed by Kenny or Evan.
