Challenge champion and Real World: Key West alum Tyler Duckworth has died at age 44, according to emergency reports. The news has also been confirmed by his mother on Facebook.
Based on North Dakota emergency response records, he was found unresponsive in his home on Tuesday, August 11, just before noon. An official cause of death has not been revealed.
Tyler is remembered for appearing on The Real World: Key West in 2006 and making his Challenge debut on The Duel later that year. He subsequently appeared on The Gauntlet 3 in 2008.
Following his first two Challenge appearances, Tyler returned for Cutthroat in 2010, where he secured his first win. He followed this up with an appearance on Rivals, where he worked with his then-foe Johnny Bananas. The duo performed well together and won the grand prize; by the end of the season, Tyler considered Johnny his “brother.”
While Tyler took a significant hiatus from The Challenge, he returned for All Stars 2 in 2021 and All Stars 3 in 2022. Off-screen, he had career experiences in digital media, the arts, and account management. Most recently, he pivoted into teaching in North Dakota, where he taught social studies.
Anyone who’s seen The Challenge knows victories don’t come easily, and Tyler was a strong competitor who was proud to represent the LGBTQ+ community. He will be remembered as a strong swimmer and keen problem-solver — with just enough knowledge of the Russian language to get him out of a jam.
Tyler was also beloved by his friends in the Challenge world and remained active with podcasts and fan events. Last year, he appeared on the Zach Nichols Podcast, and he appeared at multiple Challenge Mania events. He recently attended a meet-up in his hometown of Minneapolis on July 31, 2026.
It is deeply saddening to lose a beloved member of the Challenge community at such a young age. He maintained friendships with many of his cast members, and his absence will be sorely missed. Tyler has etched his name in Challenge history, and viewers will remember him as an outspoken part of the community with great accomplishments both on and off screen.
