On May 21, 1992 MTV started a revolution by launching their first ever reality show- The Real World.
It seems like ages since we’ve heard names like Andre, Dominic, Jacinda, Flora or Elka on MTV…and there’s a logical explanation for that…it has been ages. Today The Real World it officially 21 years old. A baby born the same day The Real World New York premiered is now old enough to buy alcohol. This is an incredible feat for any TV show, and the Real World may be the first reality show to hit this milestone.
Congratulations MTV and Bumin & Murray! Hopefully we’ll have another 21 years!

Very cool, but did you realize that this picture is for the LA cast, and not Season 1’s NY cast???
Yes. I use a RW NY pic for every history-related RW post. I figured I’d switch it up.
Glad you recognize the RW LA cast though! Not everyone does anymore!
I agree that Real World was the first reality show as we know them today, it’s definitely the show that defined the genre, but Cops debuted in 1989 and I always considered that to be the first reality show. What do you think?
