In light of the recent coronavirus epidemic, almost all sporting events have been suspended. The NBA, NHL, and MLB have postponed games and sports fans aren’t going to have much to watch. Of course, this is a necessary precaution to prevent the spread of the disease, but the businessman in Wes identified a very interesting point:
The Challenge: Total Madness, which was filmed in Fall of 2019, will be debuting in a couple of weeks. Challenge fans often refer to the show as “the fifth major sport” (looking at you Derrick Kosinski), but it might become one of the most important sports on TV. Entirely due to lack of competition, but it’s still an opportunity for The Challenge to prove it can fill a void.
If I worked at MTV right now, I’d want to start playing War of the Worlds 1 and 2 in preparation for Total Madness. Give sports fans some competitions to watch and pump up the ads for Total Madness.
MTV is sitting on a new season of the show and people are going to be watching more TV due to the increased amount of time spent indoors. It just makes sense to use The Challenge to feed the need for competition, and we know a good TV rivalry can reel people into the show.
I’m sure we’ll just get a bunch of Ridiculousness on MTV, but Wes makes a lot of sense. Perhaps he’s outgrown the network that raised him, because his ideas seem to make more sense than the current philosophy behind the MTV schedule.
