Seven Challenge Seasons With Underwhelming Preseason Responses

These seasons had a lot going for them, but fan hype wasn't one of those things.

A new Challenge season can carry a high level of excitement. Usually, this is attributed to the format, the return of a cast member, or people riding high from the prior season.

Other times, the Challenge fandom isn’t feeling the buzz. There are many reasons people start to feel disinterested, but when it’s universally felt among Challenge fans, there’s probably a logical reason people don’t care much. Sometimes the season proves its worth and people regain interest, but other times, the show doesn’t live up to its low expectations.

With Battle for a New Champion on the way, these Challenge seasons seemed to have the lowest levels of anticipation. Of course, there are some generalizations made here, so there’s a chance that while you were hyped, other people didn’t care.

The Island

Leading up to this season, MTV did one thing extremely right: They released a teaser of Kenny and Johanna making out in the sand before the show was even done filming. This built hype, but by the time the season was getting real promos, people had no idea what to expect. The challengeless Challenge didn’t capture a lot of interest and many people went into it with an “I’ll give it a try” attitude. In many cases, they jumped ship before the season was over.

Fresh Meat 2

In recent years, it feels like this season has seen an increased level of appreciation. When it first aired, it didn’t get the same respect. The franchise wasn’t as desperate for new Challengers as it was when Fresh Meat 1 aired, which is apparent by the weird blend of “veterans” who were cast. Based on ratings, fans weren’t looking for new blood — or maybe they were just sick of the Wes vs. Kenny storyline.

Rivals 3

I admit, this season had fun promos, and as an old-school fan of the show, it was very reminiscent of earlier seasons. The issue was with the casting here. Many of the cast members were rookies from Are You the One or Bloodlines, and many of the rivalries seemed fake. But, the season did end up giving us memorable moments and helped many Challenge staples get their start on the show.

The Inferno 3

The Duel was popular, but by the time The Inferno 3 rolled around, it seemed people lost interest. There wasn’t a lot of buzz surrounding the season, likely because many of the major storylines from The Duel were absent. Additionally, MTV.com wasn’t pushing out content, and the network was showing a low number of ads. Perhaps the biggest issue was the fact that MTV had nothing else popular on the network, so when it did air ads, people didn’t watch.

Spies, Lies and Allies

When this season started filming, there were three types of people on the cast: newbies from weird shows, veterans we just saw on Double Agents, and Amanda. This made it hard for viewers to get pumped for the season, especially when The Challenge was already saturated with rookies who weren’t getting recast.

Battle for a New Champion

According to the promo, this is the season TJ had been waiting for. Based on fan reactions, he’s alone. While a lot of people were getting sick of MTV casting and disposing of rookies, nobody was asking for an all-rookie season. People wanted a better blend of new and old, and based on current reactions, production messed up the formula.

The Challenge: World Championship

I’ll give props where they’re due, this season ended up being pretty good. But the seasons leading up to it weren’t as popular. The UK and Australian Challenges of the show failed to connect with audiences, and when this season started getting promos, Paramount+ didn’t have any international seasons on the service. So when it finally aired, people had lots of reasons not to watch.

Battle of the Bloodlines

There was a very weird feeling going into this season, and sadly, it was because so many cast members were impacted by the deaths of Diem and Knight. Some people wanted time away from the environment, which is understandable, while other people were OK to compete (also understandable). However, the influx of newbies felt wrong at the time, especially because MTV had just established Are You the One? as a feeder show. With all of these elements, the season debuted to abysmal ratings, though they did grow.
