Challenge: Cutthroat (42)

Has Cutthroat’s Format Already Failed?

Only two Blue Team men remain, but the format requires at least three players.

We’ve only lost three competitors so far on Cutthroat — and every single one has been a member of the Blue Team. Now, the Blue Team only has two remaining men, and the season’s format already feels broken.

On Cutthroat, there are three possible scenarios after a daily challenge:
1. The team wins: All members are safe; the captains have power.
2. The team comes in last. All team members are eligible for elimination, captains included (depending on gender).
3. The team comes in second. Two cast members are eligible for elimination, but the team captain is safe.

While the Blue Team can continue into the next week, assuming it’s a female elimination, they could have issues going into daily challenge five. If the team comes in second, the men cannot adhere to the season’s format. Either the captain won’t receive safety, or the non-captain will be sent straight into the Arena.

We don’t know how production will handle this situation if it occurs, but we’re already seeing flaws in this season’s format, and this really shouldn’t be a shock.

Pretty much every multi-team season has a team that struggles, like the Ruby Cell on Spies, Lies and Allies, or Era 1 on Battle of the Eras. So, it’s surprising production landed on such a convoluted format, especially considering that Cutthroat has one of the smallest Challenge casts in recent years.

We’ll likely see Cutthroat’s format get tweaked as the cast dwindles. The current design likely foreshadows a format shakeup, which could look like a second team selection, merging into two teams, or an opportunity for Arena winners to switch teams.

This isn’t a definite spoiler, but it’s pretty clear based on the numbers. If production wanted to hide this looming “twist,” they should have used a season format that could be sustained for more than four episodes.
