MTV is trying something new this season. Real World Skeletons airs Tuesdays at 10 (starting Dec. 16) while Battle of the Exes 2 will air Tuesdays at 11 (starting Jan 6).
Is this a good idea? It seems fairly obvious that this is a ploy to get more ratings. Battle of the Exes 1 was a very popular format and Exes 2 already has a strong buzz surrounding it. The Real World is starting to gain a buzz for this season as well. However, The Real World has had trouble maintaining ratings if you look at its recent history and the previous Challenge season wasn’t the highest rated either. It may be a good idea to attempt to cross over the audiences.
However, there are some limitations. Firstly, a lot of people won’t want tot stay up until midnight to watch Battle of the Exes 2, which may hurt ratings (of course, Are You the One fans are used to a show that aired in the 11 PM timeslot). Also, this limits the ability to have Aftershows. People will not want to stay up even later to watch an Aftershow, especially because The Real World ends at 11 PM.
This isn’t the first time MTV aired two of the franchise’s shows back-to-back. Road Rules Viewers Revenge was moved to the 10:30 timeslot following Real World Denver in 2007. Back then the shows were only half an hour.
