The past year and half have been have been hard on MTV. People continue to cut cable, and ratings continue to fall. The Challenge and The Real World have been two notable shows to feel the impact of this shift, but MTV has seen a decline across the board.
Recent studies have shown that first quarter ratings in 2015 are down 29% when compared to 2014. This movement has resulted in many failed shows. MTV has recently made the shift to scripted television, but many of these scripted shows have failed to gain a strong following. Still, the future of MTV seems to be one where scripted shows have a home. For example, a TV-series adaptation of the movie “Scream” is planned to air in June.
The most recent victim of MTV’s rating decline is the Movie Awards whose ratings fell roughly 40% when compared to the previous year.
So, when we see a decrease in ratings on The Real World & The Challenge we know that the entire network is struggling. While these shows have been struggling, their ratings reflect an increase that has impacted all of MTV. Perhaps if MTV had more successful shows, The Challenge & The Real World would also see an increase in ratings.
