Was The Challenge: XXX Too Long?

Remember when Cory sent Darrell home? Or when Shane and Simone got into the fight? Or when Tori cried over Derrick leaving? Probably not.

All of this drama aired four months ago and was discussed on the first part of the reunion last week. This week we will see the final episode of the season and the second part of the reunion. This is the 19th episode of the season and 19th consecutive week where we had an episode of The Challenge to tune into.

A decade ago, 16 episodes was the standard for The Challenge, omitting reunion specials and pre-season specials. The Gauntlet 2 has 17 episodes of challenges, matching this season. It’s clear that in the past viewers were tuned in for the long haul, but there was on big difference: episodes were only 30 minutes long. So, almost all of those Gauntlet 2 episodes had a challenge and an elimination in thirty minutes.

Now, 19 episodes into Dirty Thirty, we still don’t have a winner. Despite the fact that viewership has remained fairly consistent, it seems viewers are bored. This season abused the power of cliffhangers. Due to the abundance, the cliffhangers have lost their impact. Further, it feels like we’re watching three dull episodes and then we get one episode filled with action and drama. I can’t help but feel this is due to poor editing choices rather than lack of good footage to fill the episode.

As much as I love The Challenge, I hope future seasons are shorter. We could have shaved two or three episodes off of this season, had more content in each episode and they would have been more fulfilling. As a long time viewer of the show, I expect a challenge and an elimination to complete in one episode. If we don’t get this there better be a good reason.

In my opinion, this season was about a month too long. There is such a thing as too much of a good thing, and this season reminded me that The Challenge is no exception.

Do you think this season was too long?

  1. As much as I love this show, I’m with you. I didn’t think the episodes were bad, but there was a decent amount of unnecessary footage that dragged out each episode and ultimately the season. With champs vs stars immediately airing right when Dirty 30 officially ends, I’ll be curious to see if the casual fans will stay interested and let’s not forget season 31 will probably air after champs Vs stars. Could suffer some Cara Maria and Cory fatigue.

  2. Remember when we use to have 30 minute episodes and the seasons ran 18 episodes a season, lasting for just as long? We’ve just gotten so use to and adjusted to the change of how networks edit their episodes/seasons these days + streaming era.
