After five years away from The Challenge, the surprise return for the next season of The Challenge is Theresa Gonzalez, now Theresa Jones.
She’s changed a lot since we last saw her on Battle of the Exes 2. She got married to former NFL wide receiver TJ Jones, and is now a mother of two.
Of all the alumni trying to return, why was Theresa picked?
There are a number of reasons why Theresa would fit the mold, but the truth is, she’s a multi-faceted returner. Firstly, it seems production is trying to recruit some “new”, strong females. While Theresa never won, she has done well on every season she appeared. She’s also has a lot of bad luck in the game, and this is good time for her to get redemption.
From a drama standpoint, she left Exes 2 with an enemy: Nany. Nany had a resurgence in relevancy over the past couple of years. Theresa could resume her beef with Nany, or find a new person to argue with. She is definitely confrontational, and we all know production loves a good fight.
Further, this season seems to have made an effort to become more diverse. Of course, Theresa gives Puerto Rico some representation on the show, but I don’t think that’s why she was chosen. Production probably wanted to address criticism that they don’t cast mothers on the show while fathers are often brought back. Theresa is returning with two kids at home.
There’s a lot of reasons to be excited for Theresa’s return. Even if she isn’t the same drama magnet we knew five years ago, she’ll still bring some competition into the game. It’s great to see someone make a comeback after a long time away from the show. If Theresa gets the chance to return, I fully support the decision.
